About MacPip
What is MacPip?
MacPip is a free directory and daily launch site for Mac apps. A person checks apps by hand, and each checked app shows a blue tick and a dated report. Apps a person has not checked yet say Check pending. It has nothing to do with the Python tool pip.
Who makes MacPip?
Justinas Rolando, who also makes the Mac app Clacky. Clacky is listed on MacPip, and we say so. See the About page.
Is MacPip the same as pip for Python?
No. MacPip is a website about Mac apps. It has nothing to do with the Python package tool pip.
Is MacPip affiliated with Apple?
No. Mac and macOS are trademarks of Apple Inc.
How does MacPip make money?
Sponsors pay for a separate row, from $19 a week, that always says Sponsored. Listing is free.
Does MacPip host app downloads?
No. Each listing links to the maker's own site or to the Mac App Store.
How many apps does MacPip list?
Today 11 apps are live and 0 have finished a hand check. These numbers update on their own.
Trust and checks
What does checked by hand mean?
For downloads, we confirm the Developer ID signature and Apple notarization. We compare the screenshots with the real app, then open it to see that it does what it says.
What does the blue tick mean?
A person checked the app on the date shown. Its page has a report listing what was checked.
What does Check pending mean?
The app is listed but has not finished a hand check yet. It has no blue tick until it does.
Does a blue tick mean an app is safe?
It is not a guarantee. It means a person looked at it on that date. Our guide explains how to tell if a Mac app is safe.
What is the difference between launching and just listing?
Launching gives your app the front page on a day you pick, with votes and a shot at Top this week, and then it stays in the directory. Just listing skips that day and puts your app straight into the directory and search. Both are free, and both get a check by a person and a followed link.
How do votes work?
One vote per app from each network, with no account. Counts stay hidden for the first 12 hours of a launch day, so there is no early lead to pile onto. We remove launches that buy votes.
Why do Sponsored rows exist?
They pay for the site. They sit apart from the list and never change its order.
Listing your app
Is it free to list a Mac app?
Yes. Listing, choosing a launch date and a followed link to your site are all free. You do not need a badge on your site or a target number of votes.
Can a sponsor buy a higher place?
No. Sponsors get a separate row that always says Sponsored. Launch order comes from votes, and sponsors cannot pay to change it or to skip the check.
How fast is the review?
Usually within a few minutes. If an app does not pass, the reason appears on its status page so the maker can fix it.
How do I submit a Mac app?
Paste your link on the submit page, check the details, pick a date and add your email. It takes about two minutes. Our guide covers submitting in detail.
Do I need an account?
No. Your status page link is all you need.
Can I choose my launch date?
Yes, for free, up to 21 days ahead. Each day takes up to 10 launches.
Do I need a badge on my site?
No. The badge is optional and changes nothing about your listing.
Is the link to my site followed?
Yes, for every listing. MacPip is new, so that link is worth little for search rankings until the site has earned links of its own.
Do downloads have to be notarized?
Usually, yes. Downloads should be signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Open source apps are welcome without it, and their report says so plainly. Mac App Store apps go through Apple's own review instead. Here is what notarization is.
What if my app is not approved?
The reason appears on your status page, so you can fix it and try again.
How do I remove my listing?
Use the delete button on your status page, which removes the listing and your email for good. Or write to [email protected].
Where else should I launch?
We compare 14 options in where to launch a Mac app, including where others are stronger than we are.
Finding apps
Is MacPip free to use?
Yes. There is no account and no paywall, and we set no cookies. Each app has its own price, shown on its page when we know it.
How are apps ordered?
Launch days are ordered by votes. Categories are ordered by most recent check. Payment changes neither.
Can I see only native or one-time purchase apps?
Yes. Browse has filters for native apps, one-time prices and free apps.
How can I tell if a Mac app is safe?
Check the source, the signature, notarization and what it asks for. Our safety guide shows the commands.
What does "Apple could not verify" mean?
macOS could not confirm the app was signed and notarized, which is not the same as finding malware. See what to do.
